This is how you help your vegetable garden survive the winter!

When temperatures drop, many plants in the (vegetable) garden need just that little bit of extra protection. Young leafy vegetables, cabbage varieties, strawberries, and winter vegetables, in particular, are sensitive to frost, cold winds, and sudden temperature fluctuations. A  climate net helps to make this transition smoother. By placing the net over the plants, a protective layer is created around the crop without hindering natural growth.

Where frost can strike the leaves directly or damage young shoots, a climate net ensures the plant experiences less stress. It retains some of the heat around the crop and reduces evaporation caused by cold winds. As a result, the leaves remain sturdier, and plants get going faster and more vigorously in the spring.

What makes the climate net different from a non-woven fabric?

Many gardeners use fleece or plastic film to protect their plants in the winter. This can help, but it also has clear disadvantages. Plastic completely seals off the plant, preventing moisture from escaping and causing mold to develop more quickly. Fleece breathes better, but it tears easily and usually only lasts one season.

A climate net has been developed as a more sustainable alternative. It is strong, flexible, and soft enough to be laid directly on the crop without damaging it. The V-mesh weave (0 × 5 × 1.5 mm, 38 g/m²) ensures that the fabric allows air and light to pass through, while still providing sufficient protection against cold and wind. Thanks to a light shading of 21%, the crop still receives sufficient sunlight to remain active.

How the climate grid works

Under the climate net, a calmer microclimate develops around the plant. The layer of air between the net and the crop tempers the cold, keeping the temperature just slightly higher than in the open air. That small difference makes a big difference during light night frost. The plant dries out less quickly, the leaves remain firmer, and sudden cold does not hit as hard.

Because the climate net breathes, the crop remains dry and healthy. Excess moisture can escape, reducing the chance of mold formation. In this way, the climate net aligns well with the natural rhythm of the garden: protecting where necessary, without sealing off or suffocating the plant.

Practical to use

The climate net is easy to use for all kinds of crops in the (vegetable) garden. You lay it over the crop, secure the edges with soil or ground pegs, and lift it briefly on sunny days for extra air circulation. In the spring, you use the same net to protect young plants from cold winds or insects. And in the summer, it acts as protection against cabbage flies, birds, and strong sun.
